Adventure therapy is a modality that is oriented in the mind (cognitive), body (behavioral), and emotions (affect). It promotes change via experiential immersion and challenge.
At Came to Pass Recovery we prescribe Outdoor Adventure experiences in various settings. The lakes, the mountains, the canyons, the rivers, and the caves that Flagstaff is surrounded by provide perfect venues for hiking, paddle boarding, kayaking, bouldering, canyoneering, snowboarding, mountain biking, and more.
Adventure therapy uses outdoor activities that can involve risk, as well as physical and emotional challenges. The learning experience awakens all our senses and it imprints in our memory deeply, creating a long-lasting effect within the whole person.
We expose our clients to structured activities in nature, the beautiful but rustic landscapes that are found all over Arizona. Our clients experience the effectiveness of this therapeutic modality that helps increase self-esteem, self-concept, self-efficacy, and self-perception.
Psychological healing occurs through the conquering of a tough mountain bike ride, completing a Grand Canyon hike, or getting back to shore after a long paddle boarding excursion. During outdoor adventure outings, our clients have an opportunity to practice and develop problem solving skills, that with repetition, nurture positive behavioral changes. The new positive behavioral changes, if carried outside of the confines of treatment to address life’s challenges, become a new and healthy coping tool. Outdoor Adventure therapy works best when supported and supplemented by other holistic therapeutic modalities like the ones offered at Came to Pass Recovery to treat drug addiction.
